What Is thalassemia?

Thalassemia is an inherited (i.e. passed from parents to children through genes) blood disorder caused when the body doesn’t make enough of a protein called hemoglobin. An important part of red blood cells which carry oxygen to all the cell of the body. There are few healthy red blood cells in the blood stream leading to anemia. A patient has abnormal hemoglobin and RBCs cannot sustain normal life.

Since Thalassemia patients require blood transfusions, you can help them by registering yourself as a regular and dedicated blood donor for a particular assigned Thalassemia patient. This will decrease the donor exposure to the recurrently transfused patients and thus limit the side effects and complications. We assign 10 donors for every patient registered with ATS.
Let’s join together to give Thalassemia patients a better healthy life.

“Blood Is meant for circulation, pass it on” With this thought I started my first blood donation 6 years ago and from then it has been unstoppable and with voluntary donation.

Saving someone’s life is more than enough for me to drive myself for the donation. Read more

FAQ

Frequently Asked questions

What was the Ideology behind ATS establishment?

In 1999, health minister Shri Digvijay Khanvilkar sir visited our blood centre in Nashik. At that time we had 6 Thalassemia major patients to whom we provided free blood bags. He was impressed with the work of Arpan Blood Centre and post visit he advised all the blood centre to issue safe and free blood units to Thalassemia patients in 2002. In 2011, the prevalence of HIV disease increased, so provision of a safe blood unit was the only intention, hence NAT equipment was installed at Arpan Blood Centre. The directors of Arpan blood bank & IMA realized that only free supply of blood is not enough but some comprehensive management should be provided to Thalassemia patients & also efforts should be taken to eradicate Thalassemia.

What are our future plans?

we aim to further conduct campaigns for Mass awareness utilizing media communication & sharing pamphlets.
Prevention: Extensive Thalassemia minor screening program aiming to completely eliminate the birth of Thalassemia major child. Antenatal screening of pregnant females.
Treatment: Rh & Kell (phenotype matched) blood unit to Thalassemia patients matched blood to all Thalassemia patients – Prevention of complications (alloimmunization) and maximum benefit of transfused red cells and reduction in number of blood transfusions.

How can I enroll to become a dedicated blood donor for Thalassemia patients?
You can visit our website www.arpanbloodbank.org
Or complete the enquiry form provided on the home page.
Why is NAT tested blood transfusion called safe blood?
NAT (Nucleic Acid Testing) is the most recent and advanced technology used for detection of Transfusion Transmitted Infections (TTI) .Thalassemia patients need repeated blood transfusion every 15 -30 days and they are exposed to multiple donors’ blood. In transfusion there is always risk of TTI due to the “window period”. NAT helps in earlier detection and hence ensures the safest possible blood unit.
